Lots of good reasons, one that comes to mind is to foster basic trust. Another important reason would be to stay healthy so you don’t get your patients sicker than they are. Practicing medicine can also be very stressful so you need to stay as healthy as possible to combat the stress.

If your doctor tells you to stop eating junk food, while wolfing down a Whopper, are you likely to pay attention? If he tells you smoking will kill you, then lights up…are you likely to pay attention?
People typically respect their health care providers as knowledgeable and respectable people…they look up to their doc(s)…it’s tough to take someone seriously when they are telling you how unhealthy something is, but they are doing that thing themselves…
The idea is, if it were REALLY that unhealthy, my doc wouldn’t be doing it, would he? I mean…he knows all about that stuff…

By example is the best method of proof for most of us. Easier to see the success and hear the results.
Unfortunately there are many medical professionals and hospital employees who are not physically fit working the front lines of patient care. We must also realize the services they provide are very stressfull. Perhaps a more positive work environment would improve the overall attitude of the caregivers.
Growth by example has proven to be one of the positive methods experienced by AA and Alanon groups.
